Many students or young people tend to flock to Australia either as a working holiday or even an extended backpacking trip. It is one of the more exotic and expensive places to backpack and in turn that offers a lot of things you need to think about.
Here we have established from a few people who have backpacked round Australia a few pointers to bear in mind when planning the trip -
1 – Take or Put Aside Extra Money
Australian immigration recommends work and holidaymakers take AUD$5,000. You must be aware that this may not be enough. If you expect to travel to Sydney or Melbourne are some of the most expensive cities in the world so be warned that meals and accommodation could be more costly here than elsewhere in the country.
2 – Tell your Bank you are going abroad and get your bank inline
If you have bad money control, our suggestion would be to transfer as much money as possible to an Australian bank account to avoid fees of $50 or more for each transfer and debit and ATM withdrawal surcharges from both countries – some banks may offer international banking providing you give notice or even pay a one-off fee.
3 – Pack your Sun Tan Lotion
The heat can be quite extraordinary in Australia especially when travelling and out on the beach.
4 – Phone home using Skype or the internet
There is no need to buy phone cards to phone home as these rates will be quite expensive, the best option is to use the internet and either Skype or another free internet phone service.
5 – Use Internet Cafe’s or Free Wi-Fi hotspots
You’ll be able to source out either free internet from an Internet Cafe or even Wi-Fi hotspots such as McDonalds or Starbucks.
6 – Talk with the Locals
As much as you can read online about guides and what to do, try talking to the locals. More often that not they will be friendly and helpful telling you what you should do, where you should go or what to try for dinner.
7- Learn their Words
The Australians have different versions for words and even different pronunciations, so it is advised that you read up on a few, such as meals and drinks.
8 – Find your own less-hyped spots
If you are backpacking you more than likely have a lot of time on your hands, you should as mentioned in point 6, talk with the locals and try out the spots that are less hyped and all the tourists might not know of.
